Benefits

Environmentally friendly erosion control mats provide the following benefits:

In all situations the erosion control mat will provide immediate surface protection and will reduce erosion in severe storms even before the new vegetation is re-established. Tests have shown a reduction in sediment loss of between 70% and 100%.

Rainfall causes erosion of exposed soil in two ways: rain splash and transportation. Both are effectively stopped by an erosion mat. Firstly, the mats have a high surface cover to prevent the rain drops from pounding into the soil. Secondly, the fibres and threads of the mat prevent the run-off water from gathering sufficient velocity to carry the soil particles away.

Wind can also be an erosion agent and the erosion mats provide protection against wind in a similar manner.

Applications

The use of erosion control mats will be beneficial in all the following areas:

  • River banks and wetlands.

  • Reclamation of mine workings.

  • Moorland footpaths.

  • Lake/ reservoir shores.

  • Tidal areas, boat wash.

  • Topsoil stockpiles.

  • Dams, revetments and balancing ponds.

  • Unstable and over steep slopes.

  • Landfill caps.

  • Landfill daily cover.

  • Railway cuttings.

  • Highway embankments.

  • Spillways, irrigation channels.

  • Facing of reinforced earth.

  • Newly laid topsoil.

  • Fire access roads.

  • Noise bunds and sand dunes.

The most comprehensive range of erosion control materials, biodegradable or non-biodegradable, seeded and unseeded, for surface protection and structural stability of soils.

Whenever soil is exposed, cut or formed the risk of erosion from wind, rain or water is high indeed. Left untreated the result is progressive instability and large amounts of silt laden run-off. The Environment Agency considers silt laden run-off to be a pollutant and is increasingly inclined to prosecute offenders for even minor offences.

The erosion may be as a result of human activity or simply that nature needs a helping hand to re-establish vegetation.
